Hybrid Potato Seeds: Building a More Sustainable and Food-Secure Future
Med: Charles Miller, Commercial Director på Solynta
Our world is facing a food crisis. Famine and drought are widespread. Farmers lack the resources necessary to produce disease-resistant, non-perishable, and climate-friendly crops. As a result, Solynta is working to solve the food crisis with hybrid potato seeds. They are easier to grow, disease-free, and retain their nutritional value and taste. Potatoes are the fourth most important food crop in the world in terms of consumption after rice, wheat, and maize. They are naturally nutrient-rich and climate-friendly, requiring significantly less water to grow than other staple foods. By making it easier for farmers worldwide to grow potatoes, Solynta believes that hybrid potato seeds can improve the lives and livelihoods of farmers while also helping communities have more reliable and nutritious food. In addition, with the effects of climate change and the increase in population growth becoming increasingly felt in agriculture and food production, Solynta’s hybrid breeding will reduce the environmental footprint of the potato value chain to create real change that will impact generations to come. In this session, Charles will discuss the benefits of hybrid breeding, its innovative technology, how it enhances the speed of product development and storage length, as well as increases logistical and phytosanitary advantages, its environmental sustainability, and advances in agricultural technology, breeding, and biotechnology.
